Because my in-laws are Russian and Jewish, they don’t celebrate Christmas, and although they keep Hanukkah, they don’t celebrate it in the same way as some folks do. Because religion wasn’t allowed in the Soviet Union, New Year’s became the important holiday of the winter. So, we go back every year, like clockwork, to a frozen New York City.
